As the capital of China, Beijing has long been the center of Chinese culture and politics. However, it has more than just historical significance – it’s also a great place to live and visit! If you’re looking to take in the sights of this amazing city, here are 10 of the best things to do in Beijing...


1) A day trip to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City

For any first-time visitors, a trip to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City is a must. These landmarks are the two most important places for China's history. There is an incredible museum and picture-taking spot in front of Tiananmen Square that allows for some really great views of these two historical locations. A walk around either one will take you all day, but it's worth it.


2) Bike Ride on the Olympic Green

A scenic bike ride along the Olympic Green will take you past many of the landmarks featured during the 2008 Olympics, such as Bird's Nest and Water Cube. You can bring your own bike or rent one from a nearby store, making it a great option for exploring all that Beijing has to offer on a bicycle.


3) Go shopping at Wangfujing Shopping Street

It's a popular tourist spot and also offers a variety of food and merchandise. Wangfujing Shopping Street also has two floors dedicated entirely to jewelry. You can find any style of jewelry, and the prices are reasonable. It's one of the top things to do in Beijing!


4) Visit Hutongs of Dongcheng District

Hutongs of Dongcheng District are lined with one-story houses made from earth, wood, and brick. They’re arranged like a horseshoe with public pathways connecting the courtyards, making it easy for neighbors to chat as they water their plants or sweep the ground. 

Dong Cheng Zhai (Beijing Hutong Tea House) is a large, sprawling courtyard house on the west side of Hou Hai Lake that dates back three centuries.


5) Have Tea in Houhai Lakeside area

Visit Houhai Lakeside area in the Summer or Winter months and enjoy some tea while taking a walk around the area. It is one of Beijing's premier romantic spots and a favorite hangout spot for locals. There are various types of tea you can enjoy on the street such as Milk Tea, Oolong Tea, Jasmine Tea, and Black Tea. Make sure to try some cake too!


6) Walk Around Yuyuantan Park

Explore the lush gardens of the Yuyuantan Park, established by Emperor Qianlong in 1750. Take a break from the bustle of city life by exploring this tranquil retreat with tree-lined walkways and ponds that reflect on surrounding willow trees. Have lunch at one of the many outdoor restaurants and enjoy views of a 14th century tower while nibbling on some dumplings or an egg tart. If you feel adventurous, rent a bike and explore this peaceful area by two wheels.


7) Take a Boat Ride Across Huanghua Lake

Paddle boating on this lake is an exceptional way to enjoy the scenery without exerting any energy, while also enjoying stunning views of Haichang's world-famous zoo. Tours offer commentary on local history and stop at pavilions along the banks of the lake for rest breaks or other activities.


8) Visit Olympic venues (2008 Summer Olympics)

Sports fans can take a tour of the sites from when China hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Bird's Nest stadium and the Water Cube are both located at Beitucheng Olympic Park, about 25 miles west of downtown Beijing. 9) Visit Temple of Heaven Park and Imperial Tombs Section: 10) Ride Through Summer Palace on your bike (Summer Palace, Old Summer Palace, etc.)

Visiting the Summer Palace is a treat for your senses. With gorgeous natural scenery and water, excellent architecture, and beautiful sculptures you'll never find yourself bored while touring this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gardens and grounds offer lots of space for exploring, napping on the grass, or just relaxing with friends. If you happen to visit during the fall months and want some more action then why not rent bikes near Taiqian Gate? Explore the parks, pavilions, lakes, bridges and more as you pedal your way through. Make sure to go early in the morning when it's less crowded and explore other attractions like Tian'anmen Square on foot before returning back here at night.
